Sustainable Agriculture & Farm-Fresh Produce Come to Viridian!
Viridian has paired up with local organic farm, Johnson’s Backyard Garden (JBG), to provide its residents and the Arlington area with a weekly supply of just-picked vegetables, fruits and herbs. Starting February 11, the farm will deliver orders every Thursday from 4pm-7pm at the Viridian Lake Club.
Plentiful, Perfect Produce
To become a part of this program, customers sign up on the JBG website where they have the ability to customize their order based on family size, delivery schedule and more. Weekly orders range from $22-$42, and members receive a variety of produce such as carrots, Brussels sprouts, spring yellow potatoes and cilantro. The website’s veggie guide showcases photos every Monday of the vegetables that will be delivered that week, and provides a seasonal chart showing what crops are harvested each month. Seasonal and local food means freshness and flavor at its best. Most of the farm’s produce is harvested no more than a day or two before it is delivered.
Community Supported Agriculture
This program is an extension of the sustainable, green lifestyle that Viridian residents care so much about. It is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) in its purest form, a partnership in which a farm harvests and supplies local produce to a community. CSAs have been steadily growing in popularity, partly attributed to greater awareness of sustainable agriculture and the local food movement.
A Way of Life
The convenience of having an array of fresh-from-the-garden food readily available makes healthy living more attainable, and allows families to prepare more home-cooked meals. In addition to produce delivery, membership includes workshops and classes on cooking and gardening and an annual spring and fall open house where members will get the chance to visit the JBC farm, see where their food is grown and meet the people who grow it. Members will also receive a weekly newsletter full of recipes, photos and details on how to handle and store produce.
