Viridian is encouraging area youth to sail, kayak and enjoy other outdoor fun in the community during a series of summer programs that comprise Camp Viridian.
In its inaugural year, Camp Viridian will consist of eight week-long sessions June 13 through Aug. 12. Participants will take part in a host of outdoor activities Viridian residents enjoy on a regular basis, including fishing, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, archery and geocaching. Field trips to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, the Perot Museum, Dallas SpeedZone and other attractions will happen each session. Camp times are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the camp is open to children ages 7 to 12. Cost is $265 per week, and parents can register their children by phoning the Dottie Lynn Recreation Center at 817-277-5001. See sessions and additional registration information below.
“I have over 15 years of experience running summer day camp programs, but have never seen a camp with so much to offer,” said Derek DeBusk, camp director and facility manager for Arlington Parks and Recreation, which is partnering with Viridian to host Camp Viridian. “With fishing, archery, sailing, kayaking and more, I think the biggest challenge we will have all summer is getting the children to go home.”
Viridian, a project of Johnson Development Corp., boasts 1,100 acres of open space and lakes including a 150-acre wooded conservation area. Residents enjoy an array of amenities, including Viridian Lake Club, which offers four pools perched alongside Lake Viridian; Fossil Park, where youngsters can dig for dinosaur “bones;” and Arrowhead Park, where dogs can run leash-free. Opening this summer is the Viridian Sailing Center, where members of the sailing center will be able to use complementary day sailers to cruise and race the 250-acre Lake Viridian.
“Nature lovers feel at home in Viridian, where approximately 50 percent of the development will remain wetlands, lakes and open space,” said Robert Kembel, general manager of the community. “We are excited about opening our doors to our youth with a slate of activities that will hopefully instill an appreciation of the great outdoors and our natural resources.”
Audubon International has named Viridian a “Certified Gold Signature Sanctuary” for its environmentally sensitive development. Home prices in the community range from $220,000s to $3,000,000. Learn more at www.viridiandfw.com.
